Darr Calls Proposed Park Fee Increase "Vacation Tax"

Rogers, AR: The Parks, Recreation, and Travel Commission has proposed a 10-percent camping and lodging fee increase at state parks across Arkansas because they say fewer people are using the parks.

Mark Darr, Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor said Wednesday, "As a small business owner, I know that the way to attract more customers is not by raising prices.  Increasing costs will not incentivize people to use park facilities more often.  In this economy, families are already looking at ways they can cut costs and take more affordable vacations. This won't help."

Darr added, "Our state parks and recreation areas are an asset, but, in tough economic times, families and businesses often have to learn to live with less. I think government should learn to do so as well."

The Commission has said it will hear public comments on this issue before the next scheduled vote.  "Citizens who object to this vacation tax should communicate their objections to the Commission," Darr suggested.

Public comments regarding the Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission's proposal may be sent via e-mail to kris.richardson@arkansas.gov or mailed to One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR  72201.  The Commission's next meeting, where they will vote on the proposal, is scheduled for 2 p.m. on August 19 in the Eagle Room at DeGray Lake Resort State Park.

Won’t bow to Beebe, says hopeful for No. 2 job

By Michael Wickline

LITTLE ROCK — The Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, Mark Darr, says Arkansas will get four years of the Democratic nominee, Shane Broadway, “saying, ‘Yes, sir’” to Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe if Broadway and Beebe are elected in November.

And that’s “going to be an ineffective and basically a wasted lieutenant governor’s spot,” said Darr of Springdale, an insurance agent who owns Mad Pizza Co. in Rogers and is making his first bid for elected office.

He said he would be a constitutional officer accountable to the people of Arkansas and independent enough to say when Beebe does a great job and when the governor doesn’t do a good job.

Mark Darr Holds Twelve Point Lead Over Opponent
Rogers, AR: Republican Nominee for Lieutenant Governor and conservative small business owner Mark Darr’s campaign released results of a poll showing Darr leading Democrat nominee State Senator Shane Broadway by 12 percentage points, 46% - 34%.

The poll was conducted by Arkansas based Diamond State Consulting Group on July 20 using a sample of 812 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3%.

“These results show us that Arkansans are tired of career politicians who think more taxes and more government are the answer,” Darr said. “Arkansans are looking for small business owners who understand how to create jobs. That's why our campaign's momentum continues to grow.”

“In the months ahead I will continue to travel across our great state and present my "Roadmap for Arkansas" to help put our state back on the right path.” Darr added.
